How do I maintain my guitar?

Stijn Scheper |

Where should I keep my guitar?

Storing your guitar is very important. It is safest to always keep it in a suitcase or cover . You can also place your guitar on a stand , but be careful that it cannot fall over. A sturdy tripod is therefore very important.

It is also possible to hang your guitar on the wall with a wall bracket . This is a nice option, but make sure that the humidity in the room is good. A good humidity for a guitar is approximately 50%, this may deviate from 45% to 55%.
Your guitar is also made around this humidity and therefore it is important that it stays this way. You measure with a humidity meter .

Perfect temperature for a guitar

The temperature is also very important for your guitar. A guitar is made of wood, and wood can shrink and grow. This only happens in millimeters, but it can make a big difference to your guitar. Do you have your guitar in a room where it often differs from heat? Then consider storing your guitar in a room where it is between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius.

Never leave the guitar in a hot or cold environment for too long. If this does happen, make sure that your guitar has enough time to get used to a normal room temperature.

Does my guitar also need to be adjusted?

In the Netherlands the weather can vary from day to day. This is detrimental to the guitar. This is because it causes the wood to shrink/expand (move) and the guitar may need to be readjusted. This is very important if you want your guitar to be playable and clear.
If you don't know how to adjust the guitar, ask someone who can. Or contact us. Our specialists can help you with this.

How do I clean my guitar?

Do I have to clean my guitar daily?

Cleaning your guitar is also an important part of the lifespan of your guitar. This is not necessary every day, but it is wise after use. Otherwise, dust can get into the electronics, causing switches and buttons to no longer work properly (80% of repairs for buttons/switches have to do with dust).

You can clean your guitar with a good cloth . Do not use household cleaning agents such as degreaser. But use natural products such as guitar detailer .

To remove the small scratch from the lacquer layer of the guitar you can also use guitar polish . Use a special cloth for the best result.

The fretboard of your guitar

The fretboard (fingerboard) of your guitar is also important to keep clean and smooth, as this ensures a better playing experience. This is best done with fretboard oil . Grease your fretboard with this oil and rub it with a cloth. Do not use other liquids to clean your fretboard such as glass cleaner or furniture polish as this may damage your guitar.

Fretboards with maple fingerboards

A fretboard with a maple fingerboard must be treated differently than a normal fingerboard. A maple fretboard usually already has a layer of lacquer. In that case, all you have to do is remove the dirt from the fretboard with a cloth and possibly a little polish . But it is also possible that the fretboard does not have a layer of lacquer. If this is the case, you should NOT use lemon oil.

It is best to use the Music Nomad F-ONE oil , which is made for a maple fretboard without a layer of lacquer.

Conclusion

It is therefore important that you maintain your guitar properly. Keep it clean, do not use household cleaners and ensure good temperature and humidity.
